Durham School merged with The Chorister School in 2021, though both schools kept their own names, the resultant Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation created a new overarching brand. Numbers have steadily grown and both schools have benefited from the merger as demonstrated by their Excellent ISI rating in 2023.
Until 2009, child choristers were only boys. However, starting in autumn 2009, the Chorister School started accepting girl choristers as well. The first mixed choir sung evensong on November 1st 2009. The choir also includes adults – Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars – many of whom are Durham University students. The quire is used daily.

Durham School is a co-ed day and boarding senior school for 11-18 year olds based in the historical northern City of Durham. While the school has a strong academic record in both GCSEs and A Levels, its strengths also lie in its sporting achievements, choral programme (Durham students can audition to become a chorister for the prestigious Durham Cathedral Choir) and extra-curricular opportunities.
