The band was founded in 1996 by Jared "Dirty J" Watson and vocalist/guitarist Dustin "Duddy B" Bushnell in Huntington Beach, California drawing inspiration from the area's reggae and ska culture. The two first met at a party during their first year of high school.

He was inspired to start his own punk band freshmen year of high school called Unknown.
