Two men, an aging Native American and a ne'er-do-well trapper from North America, race to claim the stallion Eagle's Wing in antebellum Mexico, meeting marauded stagecoach travelers and garrisoned Mexicans along the way.
1 mag 1980 · Though made in Britain and Europe, Eagle's Wing qualifies as a Western. Easterner Pike (Martin Sheen) does a lot of growing up in a hurry when he becomes a trapper out-West. By mid-film, Pike is accomplished enough to compete with Comanche chief White Bull (Sam Waterston, there's a masterpiece of nontypecasting!) over possession of a white, wild stallion.
Eagle's Wing, penned by John Briley (Gandhi), is perhaps an apotheosis for Harvey as director probing specific and sustained thematics, and Richard's Things in response is his striking, calculated and effective diminuendo. It is also Harvey's return to the British film industry after a short tenure in Hollywood and American television films.
The chief is attacked by White Bull (Sam Waterston), a vicious Kiowa brave, who subsequently ambushes the trappers, killing Henry. Pike is left alone to fend for himself and, as he learns how to survive in the hostile environment, his mind turns to revenge. Western 1978 1 hr 51 min. NR. Eagle's Wing (1979) is the type of film you rarely see, filled with poetic shots of the desert landscape, it is sumptuous merely to watch. From the looks of it, it seems to be about Texas or New Mexico territories tribes, probably Comanche and Kiowa, or even the Plains Apache (also called Kiowa-Apache). Sam Waterston as White Bull is exceptional.
