The settlers claimed the land in the name of their king, James the First, and began exploring the coast to find the best place to make their permanent settlement, the first for the English in the New World.

In reality, it was Wingfield who despised John Smith, but the filmmakers preferred the sinister sound of "Ratcliffe".
