Elia Kazan's film work reflected key currents in American social, political and cultural life. This book uses archive sources to examine Kazan's film work between 1945 and 1976, and in particular to critically examine the role of the film director as a cultural entrepreneur, making key choices in his collaborations and drawing attention to key social issues.
Created by Annie Tresgot in 1982, the film features interviews conducted with Kazan by famed French film critic Michel Ciment, and is rounded out with clips from the director’s films. Synopsis "I was an outsider,” recalls director Elia Kazan (1909-2003), speaking about how the color of his skin, his Greek origins, and Jewish roots complicated his assimilation into American society.

In 1999, Elia Kazan (1909-2003) received an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement; it was a controversial award, for in 1952 he had given testimony to the HUAC Committee, for which he was ostracized by many.

Elia Kazan, all'anagrafe Elias Kazancıoğlu ( Costantinopoli, 7 settembre 1909 [1] – New York, 28 settembre 2003 ), è stato un regista, sceneggiatore, attore, scrittore, produttore cinematografico e teatrale greco naturalizzato statunitense, cofondatore nel 1947 dell' Actors Studio di New York con Cheryl Crawford e Robert Lewis [2] .
