She was a descendant of the Scottish King, Robert the Bruce. Brought up to duty, she worked to nurse troops in World War I when her home was used as a hospital for the wounded.

The family divided its time between St Paul's Waldenbury in Hertfordshire, Glamis Castle in Scotland and 20 St James's Square in London.
