He is one of only two persons to serve as President of the Organization of American Historians, American Historical Association, and Society of American Historians.
In 1988, Eric Foner published one of the most important scholarly works on the post–Civil War era: Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution, 1863–1877. In 2019, he returned to this period and published a book with a diferent emphasis: The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution.
Eric Foner is DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University. Foner received his doctoral degree at Columbia under the supervision of Richard Hofstadter. His publications have concentrated on the history of political ideology and race relations in nineteenth-century America.
