Cristiano Ernesto era l'unico figlio di Ermanno Augusto, Margravio Ereditario di Brandeburgo-Bayreuth, avuto dalla sua prima moglie (e prima cugina), Sofia di Brandeburgo-Ansbach . La morte del padre (6 febbraio 1651) lo rese il nuovo erede di Bayreuth.

Il Principato di Bayreuth (o Brandeburgo-Bayreuth) fu un principato sovrano del Sacro Romano Impero che aveva il suo centro nella città bavarese di Bayreuth. Sino al 1604 venne conosciuto col nome di Principato di Kulmbach (o Brandeburgo-Kulmbach ).
