In early 1931, Richter had a penectomy performed by Institute physician Ludwig Levy-Lenz, and in June that year an artificial vagina was surgically grafted by Gohrbandt, making her the first transgender woman of whom records remain to undergo vaginoplasty.

29 mag 2023 · Erwin Gohrbandt was one of Hirschfeld’s surgical collaborators and one of the first surgeons to perform sex reassignment surgeries with a vaginoplasty. During World War II, he participated in atrocious hypothermia experiments on prisoners in Dachau concentration camp. He was never prosecuted.

Ab August 1939 war Erwin Gohrbandt Beratender Chirurg des Heeres und ab 1940 beim Inspekteur des Sanitätswesens der Luftwaffe der Wehrmacht tätig. Mit Wirkung vom 1. Oktober 1940 wechselte er als Chef der Chirurgischen Abteilung an das Städtische Robert-Koch-Krankenhaus und wurde zugleich zum Klinikdirektor der III.
