While Adolf Frederick was bishop of Lübeck (1727–50), he administered Holstein-Kiel (1739–45) during the minority of Duke.

He was so popular among the locals that he was given a sort of state funeral by the Bolsheviks. He was buried in the Cathedral of Tashkent, which was later demolished by the Soviet regime.
