Fertilisation of Orchids is a book by English naturalist Charles Darwin published on 15 May 1862 under the full explanatory title On the Various Contrivances by Which British and Foreign Orchids Are Fertilised by Insects, and On the Good Effects of Intercrossing.

Fertilisation of Orchids (1862 and 1877) An introduction by Gordon Chancellor. During the 1840s and early 1850s Charles Darwin established his scientific reputation with a series of books based on his Beagle discoveries, while privately developing his theory of evolution by natural selection.
It was concerned with working out in detail the relationships between sexual structures of orchids and the insects which fertilise them, their evolution being attributed to natural selection. It is therefore the first of the volumes of supporting evidence.

Darwin’s studies of orchids began in England, not far away from his home in Kent. He was amazed and fascinated by the huge variety of colours and shapes in this family of plants.
