Fine Gael was founded in 1933 in the amalgamation of Cumann na nGaedheal (‘Party of the Irish’) and two lesser parties, the Centre Party and the National Guard (the ‘Blueshirts’).

He served as taoiseach until June 2020 and returned to the post in December 2022. He resigned in April 2024.
