Five Go Down to Sea is an amusing enough entry in the series, but strictly formulaic. We have seen dirty but helpful children, drug smugglers, sideshow performers and secret passages before, so it is not as if Blyton is attempting anything new. Indeed the book’s climax comes on us so soon that it feels perfunctory.
