Fritz Hermann Michael Bayerlein (14 January 1899 – 30 January 1970) was a Nazi German general in the Wehrmacht of during World War II. He initially served as a staff officer, including with Erwin Rommel in the Afrika Korps.

Brigadier General Fritz Bayerlein commanded the German 3rd Panzer Division during the autumn and winter campaigns in the region of the Dnieper River. On paper Wöhler’s Eighth Army looked impressive.

He ordered General Fritz Bayerlein, commander of the elite Panzer Lehr Division, to organize a task force consisting of remnants of his own division together with the 9th Panzer Division, the 106th Panzer Brigade, and the 11th Panzer Division.
Fritz Bayerlein was made captain in 1934 and then major four years later. During the German invasion of Poland in 1939, Bayerlein served as the operations officer of the 10th Panzer Division. The war against France in 1940 saw Bayerlein on the staff of General Heinz Guderian’s XIX Panzer Corps.
