He also held a great deal of national influence from 1933 to 1940, although he did not at that time hold any elected office.

Fulgencio Batista was a Cuban politician who ruled as a dictator from 1952-1959. He was toppled during the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Batista was born on 16 January 1901 in Oriente province, Cuba, into a poor family. Batista joined the army in 1921. By 1933 he had been promoted to the rank of sergeant stenographer.
