27 apr 2024 · To wit, G.H. Hardy studied pure mathematics unapologetically (!) because it had little or no applications to real life during his time period. In fact in Victorian times, pure mathematics was mostly viewed as a recreational activity with various periodicals tailored toward circles of the gentry, who enjoyed doing mathematics for its own sake.

6 giorni fa · Avi Wigderson’s recent Turing Award is a compelling moment to reflect on the fluid nature of mathematical careers and the erroneous stereotypes surrounding them. G.H. Hardy’s assertion in *A Mathematician’s Apology* that mathematics is a young man's game is eloquently countered by Avi’s illustrious career and the achievements of others well beyond the supposed prime age.
