George Fletcher Bass ( / bæs /; December 9, 1932 – March 2, 2021) was an American archaeologist. An early practitioner of underwater archaeology, he co-directed the first expedition to entirely excavate an ancient shipwreck at Cape Gelidonya in 1960 and founded the Institute of Nautical Archaeology in 1972.

George Bass (born Jan. 30, 1771, Aswarby, Lincolnshire, Eng.—died 1803, at sea en route from Australia to South America) was a surgeon and sailor who was important in the early coastal survey of Australia. Bass was apprenticed as a surgeon and in 1789 accepted in the Company of Surgeons.

George Bass (1771-1803), surgeon and sailor, was born on 30 January 1771 at Aswarby in Lincolnshire, England, the only child of George Bass, a tenant farmer, and his wife Sarah, née Newman. When his father died in 1777 George moved with his mother to Boston.
George Bass was a pioneer in the field of underwater archaeology and founder of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology. As the first archaeologist to excavate underwater using the same principles and standards as excavations on land, he helped revolutionize an entirely new field.
