Iraqi insurgency (2003–2011) An Iraqi insurgency began shortly after the 2003 American invasion deposed longtime leader Saddam Hussein. It is considered to have lasted until the end of the Iraq War and U.S. withdrawal in 2011. It was followed by a renewed insurgency.

His maternal uncle Abd al-Ilah served as regent until Faisal gained his majority in 1953. A coup in 1958 overthrew the monarchy, and Faisal was killed during the fighting.
