8 ott 2021 · KA Abbas’s Dharti Ke Laal (1946) and Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zamin (1953) are acknowledged classics. But there was another, deeply moving film, Godaan (1963), directed by Trilok Jetley, who made just this one film, based on Munshi Premchand’s classic story, published in 1936.
Hori, a poor peasant, takes loan from a cowherd to purchase a cow. His life takes a drastic turn when Hori's jealous brother poisons his cow, leaving the animal to die.

Review by Ivan Nāgar ★★★½. Almost its entire goodness comes from the source material of Premchand's most renowned novel, which is also infinitely superior. Cast: Rajkumar, Kamini Kaushal, Mehmood (in a rare non-comic role) amongst other supporting players. Music by Ravi Shankar, think this as a tribute to him on his centenary.
Godan film and text both are the true stories of exploitation and corruption of peasant community of the Indian society. It is a clear picture of the struggle throughout their lives.
