I captured the photo above as we were cruising along the north side of Pooley Island, after leaving BC’s fabled Fiordland on BC’s North coast, in the heart of the Great Bear Sea.

20 mar 2024 · 2. Spirit Bears are rare, white-coated Black Bears (Ursus americanus kermodei) that live in the coastal temperate rainforests of Northwest British Columbia. Their striking color is caused by an uncommon recessive genetic trait. Spirit Bears are not a unique species or subspecies, but a unique coloration of the coastal British Columbian Black Bear.

According to the release, the Province and Kwiakah First Nation will use the information gathered to inform their decision making.
