Nel 1633 la sede di Osnabrück, nel corso della guerra dei trent'anni, cadde nelle mani delle truppe svedesi ed egli dovette lasciarla a Gustavo di Wasaborg, un figlio illegittimo del re di Svezia, Gustavo Adolfo II; venne ordinato diacono il 4 giugno 1634 .

Giunto a cento metri a sud dell’isolotto di Beckholmen, una raffica improvvisa investì il cassero di dritta, facendo sbandare la nave e provocando un rapido ingresso di acqua dai portelli aperti della seconda batteria. Il timoniere fu molto bravo a recuperare la stabilità, ma una seconda raffica lo inclinò ancora.
