Born in Siegen, Southern Westphalia, on 25 February 1896, [2] Heinrich Gontermann grew into a tall slender man, full of vitality. He abstained from smoking and was only a social drinker. [3] .

Died: 30 October 1917. Place of Death: La Neuville, near Marle. The son of a cavalry officer, Heinrich Gontermann joined the 6th Uhlan Cavalry Regiment in August 1914. Serving at the Front, he was wounded in action in September 1914. He was promoted to Leutnant in the spring of 1915 and awarded the Iron Cross, second class.
Heinrich Gontermann was a German fighter ace during World War I. He was credited with 17 confirmed aerial victories flying with Jagdstaffel 5 before being appointed to command Jagdstaffel 15. While leading this fighter squadron, he shot down a further 22 enemy aircraft.

12 dic 2022 · On October 30, 1917, Leutnant Heinrich Gontermann, commander of Jasta 15 and a 39-victory ace, was killed when the top wing of his new Fokker Dr.I 115/17, disintegrated. The next day, Leutnant Gnther Pastor, a pilot from Jasta 11, was killed under similar circumstances in Dr.I 121/17.
