Bertrand compte parmi les membres de la commission militaire chargée de juger l'auteur du crime. Rentré en France, il est aide de camp de l'Empereur pendant la Première Campagne d'Autriche en 1805 et l'accompagne à Austerlitz, Iéna, Eylau, Friedland, ainsi qu'en Espagne en 1808.
