Henry Fitzroy (1519–36) was the son of Henry VIII and Elizabeth Blount, a Lady in Waiting to Katherine of Aragon. His illegitimacy meant he had no claim upon the throne, but he was created a Knight of the Garter, and Duke of Richmond and Somerset aged six.
Il primogenito di questi, Henry, fu giustiziato dai partigiani degli York nel 1464, ma il secondogenito Edmund continuò a chiamarsi duca di S. fino alla morte (1471). Con lui si estingue la linea dei Beaufort. Il titolo rinacque con Enrico VII che lo conferì al figlio Henry, poi con Enrico VIII che lo diede al figlio illegittimo Henry Fitzroy.
A part of the Beaufort connection to the Somerset duchy, the title of Duke of Richmond was important as the earldom of Richmond had been held by his grandfather King Henry VII and by his great-grandfather Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond.
