Prima di diventare regista e di approdare al cinema, Henry King ebbe le prime basi nei teatri, ci lavorò per tre anni e mezzo, e sin da giovane frequentò quel tipo di messa in scena, che lo portò a conoscere Thomas Ince, il quale lo fece diventare prima suo allievo, poi lo designò in piccoli ruoli in alcuni film nel 1912, fin quando nel 1914 si mise dietro una macchina da presa.
