Jagged Little Pill is the third studio album by Canadian-American singer Alanis Morissette, released on June 13, 1995, through Maverick and her first album to be released worldwide. It marked a stylistic departure from the dance-pop sound of her first two albums, Alanis (1991) and Now Is the Time (1992).
The two wrote and recorded Morissette's first internationally released album, Jagged Little Pill, and by the spring of 1995, she had signed a deal with Maverick Records. In the same year she learned how to play guitar.
At age 14 Morissette signed a song-publishing deal that led to two dance-pop albums, Alanis (1991), which sold at least 100,000 copies and earned her Canada’s Juno Award for most promising female vocalist of the year, and Now Is the Time (1992), which sold more than 50,000 copies.
While chatting with Stern, Morissette refused to confirm who "You Oughta Know" was about, going so far as to joke whether she would "never" reveal it, or if she would someday. Yet one telling line suggests that Alanis didn't mean to write a song — let alone a whole album — about her ex-boyfriend Dave Coulier.

The two also shared an interview together, in which Morissette revealed how "Ironic" almost didn't make it into her album, given that it wasn't "autobiographical enough." She revealed, "Right after 'Ironic,' I started writing from this super-, searingly quick-channeled place… but 'Ironic' was right at that turning point, so it's more storytelling," she explained.
