Its songs were composed by Harold Arlen, with lyrics by E. Y. "Yip" Harburg. They won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Over the Rainbow".
Herbert Stothart was born of Scottish and Bavarian descent in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on September 11, 1885, studying music in Europe and at The University of Wisconsin, where he also taught. He was hired by producer Arthur Hammerstein to be musical director for touring companies of Broadway shows, and was soon writing music for the producer's nephew, Oscar Hammerstein.
