  1. Hermann II (c. 1342 – 10 June 1413), nicknamed the Scholar (German: der Gelehrte), was Landgrave of Hesse from 1376 to 1413. Life. Hermann II was born around 1342 to Louis the Junker and Elizabeth of Sponheim, daughter of Simon II, Count of Sponheim-Kreuznach. Louis the Junker was a son of Otto I, Landgrave of Hesse.

  3. Henry I of Hesse was raised to the status of prince by King Adolf of Germany in 1292. From 1308 to 1311, and again from 1458, the landgraviate was divided into Upper Hesse and Lower Hesse. Hesse was re-unified under Landgrave William II in 1500.

    Herman II, Landgrave of Hesse, was born about 1342,supposedly in Grebenstein Castle,though there appears to be no primary sources that support this as his birthplace.     He married firstly Johanna von Nassau, daughter of Johann I, Count of Nassau-Weilburg, and his first wife, Johanna of Saarbrücken. It seems they were married or perhaps a contract was signed 6 March 1368, when Johanna was still a young child, and then married in person either 30 January or 11 February 1377 at Kassel.     Hermann II died 10 June 1413 according to most sources accessed; the Wikipedia articles states he died 24 May 1413 but there are no references cited and it is difficult to judge whether this is a mistake or a valid alternate date. He was buried at St Elisabethkirche, Marburg.
