Carl Gustaf Arend Benjamin Tersmeden was born on 10th February 1917 into a prominent and wealthy Swedish family. His father was a high-ranking lawyer and a member of the Swedish nobility.
Maj-Lis Genberg, Aunt Hjördis, and Gudrun Genberg, at Bromma airport, 28th July 1957. Among the family who met Hjördis in Stockholm were her sixteen-year-old twin nieces, Maj-Lis and Gudrun Genberg, daughters of her brother Karl. Both would soon follow similar early career paths to their aunt.
From the 1950s into the 1970s, Hjördis Niven’s twin nieces Gudrun and Maj-lis Genberg (also known as Pia and Mia) enjoyed colourful and successful careers as models, dancers, singers, and actresses. They were born in Sundsvall on 7th April 1941, the daughters of Hjördis’ only brother, poor old seriously outnumbered Karl Georg.
A whirlwind romance, 1948. In late July 1948 Hjördis and David Niven boarded the SS Britannic, bound for Liverpool and then Claridges Hotel in London. On arrival, the couple were happy to chat with the waiting press. “The twelve-day voyage was really our honeymoon,” David said. “It has been wonderful, and so has Hjördis.”.
30 gen 2024 · Hjordis and David Niven arrive in London, 11th October 1972. In late 1958, Shirley MacLaine witnessed Hjördis, emboldened by alcohol, trying to provoke her husband by flirting with other men in his presence. “I remember thinking I should look for the deeper understanding in everybody,” Ms MacLaine recalled in her autobiography.

The newly reconstituted Niven family finished the last leg of their journey to Pacific Palisades by train, arriving on Thursday 29th January 1948. “So we came to California and our house in Pacific Palisades,” Hjördis wrote. “It is located on a hill high above the ocean with a wonderful view of the Pacific Ocean.
