Homer Philip Groening (December 30, 1919 - March 15, 1996) was a Canadian-American filmmaker, advertiser, writer, and cartoonist. He was also the father of Matt Groening and inspired the names of Homer Simpson and Philip J. Fry. Groening was known for work on many different types of short films.

He named the character after his father, Homer Groening. After appearing for three seasons on The Tracey Ullman Show, the Simpsons received their own series on Fox, which debuted on December 17, 1989. Homer is the nominal foreman of the paternally eponymous family. He and his wife Marge have three children: Bart, Lisa and Maggie.

Homer Groening was a Canadian-American advertiser, film director, short story writer and cartoonist. He made various amateur movies and some cartoons in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, among them the comic strip 'Phoebe, Get Your Man' (co-created with Peg Bracken).
