James Hugh Calum Laurie CBE ( / ˈlɒri /; born 11 June 1959) is an English actor, comedian, writer, and musician. He first gained recognition for his work as one half of the comedy double act Fry and Laurie with Stephen Fry.

He was educated at Eton and Cambridge. Son of an Olympic gold medalist in the sport, he rowed for the England youth team (1977) and for Cambridge (1980).

James Hugh Calum Laurie nasce l'11 giugno del 1959 a Oxford, in Inghilterra, quarto di quattro figli (ha due sorelle e un fratello), da una famiglia piuttosto benestante: il padre, W.G.R.M. Ran Laurie, è un medico ed ex olimpionico di canottaggio, vincitore della medaglia d'oro ai Giochi di Londra del 1948.
