31 mar 2023 · A special exhibition of the most important Netherlandish artist of the second half of the 15th century, who painted monumental and expressive works of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Madonna. The exhibition will present almost all of his surviving paintings and drawings, including loans from international collections, in one of the largest rooms of the Gemäldegalerie.

È un trittico dalle imponenti dimensioni (cm 253 x 583), costituito da tre tavole unite da cerniere, concepito come arredo richiudibile dell'altare maggiore: le ante laterali, come sportelli, dovevano essere mantenute chiuse a coprire lo scomparto centrale in determinati periodi dell'anno liturgico, quali la Quaresima.

His 'Portinari Altarpiece' arrived in Florence in 1483 where it made a considerable impression and influenced a number of artists, including Ghirlandaio.
