Interesting film set in the twilight of communist East Germany. It feels like an elegy to broken dreams and faded idealism. The son escaping to West Germany clues us into this, the broken dining table perhaps a metaphor for the brokenness of east Germany in its final days. The late Bruno Ganz is brilliant as the irascible geriatric communist hero.
