Ivor Novello (born David Ivor Davies; 15 January 1893 – 6 March 1951) was a Welsh actor, dramatist, singer and composer who became one of the most popular British entertainers of the first half of the 20th century. He was born into a musical family, and his first successes were as a songwriter.

29 mar 2024 · Ivor Novello was a Welsh actor-manager, composer, and playwright, best known for his lush, sentimental, romantic musicals. Novello, the son of the celebrated Welsh singing teacher, Dame Clara Novello Davies, was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, and served with the Royal Naval Air Service.

Born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1893, he was the son of a tax-collector father and a well-known singing teacher mother. His prodigious musical skills were evident fairly early. Trained at the Magdalen College Choir School on a soprano scholarship, he soon began writing songs under the name Ivor Novello.

The Dancing Years (1939) and Perchance to Dream (1945) were rooted in the national consciousness. Everyone had to go. Novello got receptions befitting a legend – ten curtain-calls, a thousand telegrams and hundreds of people at the stage door. He became the singular ruler of musicals.
