Maria Stuarda (AFI: /stuˈarda/; in inglese Mary Stuart; Linlithgow, 8 dicembre 1542 – Fotheringhay, 8 febbraio 1587) è stata regina di Scozia dal 14 dicembre 1542 al 24 luglio 1567, regina consorte di Francia dal 10 luglio 1559 al 5 dicembre 1560 e regina d'Inghilterra per i legittimisti inglesi dell'epoca che non riconoscevano Elisabetta I come legittima erede di Enrico VIII.

James succedette al padre come conte nel 1556.

James Hepburn's parents divorced before 16 October 1543 and he was brought up at Spynie Castle, Moray, by his notorious great-uncle, Patrick Hepburn, bishop of Moray. Continuing his studies in Paris, where he learned to speak fluent French, he read military history and theory in French translations from the Latin and wrote in an elegant, italic hand.

La bambina aveva due fratellastri, Arnoud Robert Alexander e Ian Edgar Bruce, che la madre ebbe dal suo primo matrimonio con il nobile olandese Hendrik Gustaaf Adolf Quarles van Ufford; fra i suoi avi, la sua famiglia contava Edoardo III d'Inghilterra e James Hepburn, IV conte di Bothwell, dal quale potrebbe essere discesa anche Katharine Hepburn[6].
