It was first translated in English in 1966, under the title Manon of the Springs. [1]
Jean de Florette est le premier tome de L'Eau des collines, diptyque romanesque de Marcel Pagnol publié en 1962. Manon des sources en est la seconde partie. À l'origine, les films Manon des sources et Ugolin ont été réalisés par Pagnol en 1952; l'histoire a ainsi été adaptée en roman après cette première version cinématographique.
The point of the film is not to create suspense, but to capture the relentlessness of human greed, the feeling that the land is so important the human spirit can be sacrificed to it. To create this feeling, Berri stands well back with his camera. There are not a lot of highly charged closeups, to turn the story into a series of phony high points.
Jean de Florette overtuigt qua sfeer, interesseert als verhaal en biedt charme via zijn acteurs om er achter te komen dat dit een eerste deel is van een film uit twee, oke dan. Maar goed, het eerste deel overtuigt dermate dat er interesse is voor het tweede deel dat ook in de top250 staat.
Jean de Florette is the first part of L’eau des collines, the novel diptych by Marcel Pagnol, which was adapted to the cinema by Claude Berri in 1986 (with masterly performances by Gérard Depardieu, Daniel Auteuil and Yves Montand). In a small village in Haute Provence, Le Papet and Ugolin covet a piece of land where a spring flows.
