After receiving classical training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Irons began his acting career on stage in 1969 and has appeared in many West End theatre productions, including the Shakespeare plays The Winter's Tale, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew and Richard II.

Daarnaast kreeg hij meer dan twintig andere acteerprijzen toegekend, waaronder Emmy Awards voor The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century en Elizabeth I , Golden Globes voor Reversal of Fortune en Elizabeth I en een Annie Award voor The Lion King .
Jeremy Irons hat bisher 28 internationale Filmpreise gewonnen und wurde für 31 weitere nominiert. 2017 wurde er gemeinsam mit Isabelle Huppert mit dem Europäischen Theaterpreis ausgezeichnet. Es ist erst das zweite Mal – nach Michel Piccoli (2001) – dass Schauspieler mit diesem Preis ausgezeichnet wurden.
