Johann Gerhard was a leading German Protestant theologian, biblical scholar, renowned polemicist, author of the standard Lutheran dogmatic treatise Loci Theologici, and spearhead of every major Lutheran theological gathering of his time. Gerhard was deeply influenced as a youth by the Lutheran.

Dubbed “the third after which there is no fourth,” Johann Gerhard (1582–1637) is commonly considered the arch-theologian of Lutheranism. Following in the footsteps of Martin Luther and Martin Chemnitz, Gerhard lived in the first generation of those born after the publication of the Book of Concord in 1580.
The Theological Commonplaces series is the first-ever English translation of Gerhard's monumental Loci Theologici. Gerhard was the premier Lutheran theologian of the early seventeenth century.
Johann Gerhard exercised a wide-spread and profound influence on the development of Lutheran theology and ecclesiastical life during his lifetime and after his death in 1637.
