His father, Jack, owned several local cinemas and by the age of fourteen, Barry was capable of running the projection box on his own - in particular, The Rialto in York.

John Barry Prendergast (York, 3 novembre 1933 – Oyster Bay, 30 gennaio 2011) è stato un compositore britannico, autore di colonne sonore cinematografiche. Durante la sua carriera Barry ha ricevuto cinque Oscar ed è noto per aver composto la colonna sonora di dodici film della serie di James Bond . È stato il primo marito dell'attrice Jane Birkin da cui ha avuto la figlia Kate (1967-2013).
En 1957, c'est en tant que trompettiste qu'il monte The John Barry Seven qui mêle jazz et rock. Parti à Londres et embauché par la maison de disque EMI, il travaille sur de nombreux arrangements des artistes de la firme et signe sa première bande originale en 1959 sur Beat Girl , le premier film du chanteur Adam Faith.
