John Allyn McAlpin Berryman (born John Allyn Smith, Jr.; October 25, 1914 – January 7, 1972) was an American poet and scholar. He was a major figure in American poetry in the second half of the 20th century and is considered a key figure in the " confessional " school of poetry.
John Berryman was a scholar and professor as well as a poet, best-known for The Dream Songs (1969), an intensely personal sequence of 385 poems that won him the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. He also wrote Homage to Mistress Bradstreet (1956), a dialogue with the seventeenth century poet Anne Bradstreet, and 77 Dream Songs (1964), a book-length poem about his anguished character Henry.
