John Cromwell Mather (born August 7, 1946, Roanoke, Virginia) is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist and Nobel Prize in Physics laureate for his work on the Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite (COBE) with George Smoot . This work helped cement the big-bang theory of the universe.

John C. Mather Biographical . I was born on Aug. 7, 1946 in Roanoke, Virginia, a small city near Blacksburg where my father was a young faculty member at the school now called Virginia Tech. For some generations, my family on both sides has been populated with scientists and school teachers.
Nel progetto Mather è attualmente capo della parte scientifica. Oltre a ciò propose insieme a David Leisawitz una missione chiamata SPECS (Submillimeter Probe of the Evolution of Cosmic Structure) con un interferometro nel lontano infrarosso, ora evoluta nel progetto SAFIR (Single Aperture Far InfraRed telescope) destinato a succedere a JWST.
