Born in Utica, New York, Curran studied illustration and design at Syracuse University, then worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, and production designer in Manhattan before moving to Sydney, Australia in 1986.
Curran then became the news director at Bloomberg.com. Curran died at home in Weston, Connecticut, on July 5, 2013, following a 14-month battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease, at the age of 59. He was survived by his wife, Joan, and their four children, Alissa, Alexandra, Joanna, and John Richard.
