John Maxwell Coetzee (født 9. februar 1940 i Cape Town) er en sørafrikansk forfatter, nå naturalisert australsk borger, bosatt i Sør-Australia. Coetzee ble som fjerde afrikaner og andre sørafrikaner (etter Nadine Gordimer ) tildelt Nobelprisen i litteratur i 2003.

Escritor sudafricano, John Maxwell Coetzee, más conocido como J. M. Coetzee, se licenció en Matemáticas y Filología Inglesa en la Universidad de Ciudad El Cabo. En 1962 se marchó al Reino Unido, trabajando como programador informático. Más tarde se trasladó a Estados Unidos, donde se doctoró en Lingüística en la Universidad de Texas.
