John Maxwell Coetzee (born 9 February 1940) is a South African-Australian novelist, essayist, linguist, literacy critic, activist and translator. He won the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature . He has won the Booker Prize twice for The Life and Times of Michael K (1983) and Disgrace (1999).

Descendant de colons afrikaners, son père était avocat et sa mère institutrice. L'anglais est sa première langue et il suit d'ailleurs sa scolarité dans une école anglaise.
John Maxwell (J.M.) Coetzee ( Kaapstad, 9 februari 1940) is een Australische schrijver en literair vertaler van Zuid-Afrikaanse origine. Op 10 december 2003 werd de Nobelprijs voor Literatuur aan hem uitgereikt. Coetzee wordt beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste schrijvers van deze tijd.
John Maxwell Coetzee. John Maxwell Coetzee sinh ngày 9 tháng 2 năm 1940 tại Cape Town ( Nam Phi ), là anh cả trong gia đình hai anh em. Mẹ ông dạy tiểu học. Cha là luật sư tập sự nhưng chỉ làm cầm chừng, và trong những năm 1941–45 phục vụ trong quân đội Nam Phi chiến đấu tại Bắc Phi và Ý.
