John Joseph William Molesworth Oxley (1784?-1828), surveyor-general and explorer, was born at Kirkham Abbey near Westow, Yorkshire, England, and baptised at Bulmer on 6 July 1784, the eldest son of John Oxley and his wife Isabella, who was related to the Irish Viscount Molesworth.

John Joseph William Molesworth Oxley (1783/1785 – 1828) was a British explorer, naval officer, and surveyor of Australia in the early period of English colonization. Oxley was appointed surveyor-general of New South Wales in 1812, and retained that position until his death.
John Oxley was an explorer who made many journeys into eastern Australia. He also had an important role in opening up Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania) to European settlement. Early Life. Oxley was born in the early 1780s near Westow, Yorkshire, England. He joined the British navy in 1799.
