Sein Vater, John Tyler senior, war ein Jugendfreund von Thomas Jefferson und im Gegensatz zu seinem Vater, der der britischen Krone diente, ein Anhänger der Amerikanischen Revolution. Tyler senior saß bis 1786 als Abgeordneter im Repräsentantenhaus von Virginia.
