Northern Vermont University has its own story of unification, as it was founded in 2016 by joining Johnson State College and Lyndon State College. Johnson State College developed from a school founded in 1828 offering primary and secondary education.
It was established in 2018 by the unification of the former Johnson State College and Lyndon State College. The university offered over 50 Bachelor's degree programs and Master's degree programs. On July 1, 2023, its two locations became campuses of the newly formed Vermont State University.
