3 giorni fa · As that title suggests, it’s a tribute to Julius Hemphill, perhaps the only obvious point of convergence for Sanborn and Berne. I got into this album around the time that JMT started reissuing its catalog on Winter & Winter, and I remember conversing with Berne about the intensity of Sanborn’s commitment to the task.

If you just concentrate on notes per se, music can become kinda like typing. I came up in St Louis with Julius, Lester Bowie, Oliver Lake and Phillip Wilson. Phillip was a very close friend.

3 giorni fa · Though his recorded output frequently veered toward the popular, Sanborn was an adventurer, too, studying with free jazz players Roscoe Mitchell and Julius Hemphill. In the 1980s, Sanborn was a member of the powerhouse Saturday Night Live house band. In 1991, Sanborn recorded Another Hand, which restated his jazz credentials.
