Twain earned a great deal of money from his writing and lectures, but invested in ventures that lost most of it, such as the Paige Compositor , a mechanical typesetter that failed because of its complexity and imprecision.

In 1908 the king would be obliged to transfer the Congo to the Belgian state — which meant supervision — while Casement would be decorated for his efforts. In the meantime he increasingly despaired of his employers.
