The King and I is the fifth musical by the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. It is based on Margaret Landon 's novel Anna and the King of Siam (1944), which is in turn derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s.

I loved ‘The King and I’ as a show: the confrontation of vastly different cultures, the experiences of this very British woman travelling halfway round the world with a young son and being exposed to the exotic world of the Siamese King with his many wives and children.
This highly anticipated West End production, which opened on May 3, 2000, starred Elaine Paige as Anna and Jason Scott Lee as the King, with Taewon Yi Kim returning as Lady Thiang.
